Colchester Kings RFC is the first gay and inclusive rugby team in East Anglia, based in Colchester, Essex. Established on June 1st 2022, the team seek to recruit people to join with the aim to give queer people and their allies a safe space to participate in team sports.
We wish to eliminate homophobia and transphobia in rugby by reducing barriers to joining in team sports. Our ambition leads us to support the LGBTQ+ community by promoting inclusion and participation in a welcoming and friendly environment.
We wish to be an IGR team that is recognised for its fierce grassroots talent and admirable sportsmanship.
In season, weekly training on happens on Monday evenings at 7pm at Colchester Rugby Club.
Anyone is welcome to come and play with us, regardless of age, experience or sexuality.
Training for 24/25 season has begun!
With the new season underway, we're still welcoming new players at any time to come and get involved with us.
We train every Monday at Colchester Rugby Club at 7pm and you're welcome to join us at any time. New players are welcome regardless of previous experience, age, or sexuality. Your first 4 weeks of training are free and then we'll ask you to register as a Player or Supporter.

Colchester Kings RFC trains at our host club Colchester RFC based at the new Northern Gateway Sports Park just off the A12.
It's approximately 25 mins from Ipswich and Clacton-on-Sea and 30 mins from Chelmsford.

No, you don't need any experience. We just want you to come along and have fun!
We welcome new players at any time of the year. Our training sessions are designed to build up your fitness and stamina, so no matter your fitness level you'll be able to join in.
Inclusive rugby welcomes people of all sexualities to join in rugby training and matches. Colchester Kings aims to give an open and inclusive space so that members of the LGBTQ+ community feel comfortable to take part in traditional team sports where the opportunity may not have previously been available.
Be sure to be bring along a bottle of water with you.
We recommend comfortable active wear that you might wear to the gym. Shorts are usually best as they allow best movement. T-shirts, vests, jumpers are all weather dependent - you may need a few layers in the winter.
Rugby boots are recommended for our grass training pitch, however we know boots can be expensive so trainers will be fine for your first few sessions.
For matches you'll need a gumshield, and for some positions you may like to wear some additional pads.
It's understandable to be nervous about some elements of rugby. We train weekly and develop our team skills including tackling and being tackled. It is possible for this to be done safely with the correct training and technique.
As with most sports, injury is possible. We ask that you follow the Coach or session leader's advice and direction to prevent injury.
